Elephant and mahout

We were in India for 9 days. During that time, we expected to see elephants along with all the other exotic sights. But it turned out that they're not as common as we thought. Until the last day, on the way from Jaipur to the airport in Delhi.

We came upon two elephants, each with their mahout, just walking along the road among all the motorcycles, cars, and trucks. Our driver stopped, and one of them came over to say hello. This elephant got painted for the Holi holiday more than a week before, but the color has faded.

Heartbreaking stories describe the treatment of elephants in India. After a few minutes photographing this one, I gave some rupees to the mahout. I hope that did not contribute to the problem.
