At the Dera, we all climbed onto carts pulled by camels. Under normal circumstances, the camels would have taken us to the village school to meet the locals, but classes had just been cancelled as a virus precaution. Instead, we were just going to see the dessert hills and wildlife.

As we were departing, a young man filmed us with his cell phone. It turned out that he posted on social media accusing us of being dangerous tourists without masks!

The police showed up later that night to check on us. They enjoyed some tea at the resort, and took pictures of themselves in the luxurious surroundings. Then they were on their way.

But from that point on, we always wore our masks in public. And we soon got word that our vacation would end early, and flights home were being rescheduled.
